Mesothelioma experts tend to agree that chemotherapy is still a valuable form of treatment. The new efforts are in the ability to focus chemotherapy to smaller and smaller points. The goal is to hit the mesothelial-tumors and malignant cells while subjecting the body to less radiation which gives the body greater strength.
Dr. Robert Comis of Drexel University in Philadelphia believes that not only does chemotherapy kill malignant cells but, the drugs may also be stimulating the body’s immune system which would make the body more likely to be able to fight off malignant cells that reemerged in the future.
Comis stated “we just completed a study which showed that, in metastatic prostate cancer, the addition of a chemotherapy drug, increased survival by 18 months in the highest risk groups. Eighteen months!” We are optimistic that this may have promising applications in mesothelioma as well.
