Mesothelioma patients are limited to frustratingly few treatment options after diagnosis. The typical treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or often times a combination of all three.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has shown some promise as a new treatment option for mesothelioma patients. PDT uses a drug called a photosensitizer coupled with a specific type of light. The National Cancer Institute states that “When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells.”
In addition to killing cancer cells, PDT has shown to also damage the vessels in tumors cutting the tumor off from nutrients necessary to sustain itself. PDT has also been show to direct the immune system to aggressively attack the tumor cells.
The new treatment is often used as an outpatient procedure and many times in conjunction with other treatments such as chemotherapy. Because of the concentrations of mesothelial cells in mesothelioma patients, PDT may provide medical personnel with a much needed additional tool in the fight against mesothelioma.
