This surgery procedure involves cutting into peritoneum, the protective lining that surrounds and protects the organs in the abdominal cavity and removing as much cancerous tissue as possible. Surgery may also involve cutting out portions of the stomach and the injection of chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdominal cavity (Hyperthermic Intraoperative IntraperitonealChemotheraphy or HIIC). Post-operatively, the patient is administered paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug, for five days. Peritoneal surgery can prolong life by five years for some patients.
