What is Asbestos?
Asbestos related diseases are diagnosed in many people of the United States and continues to increase. Experts predict approximately 60,000 mesothelioma deaths will occur between 2010 and 2030. Several hundred thousand Americans will develop asbestos-related lung cancer, as well.
Asbestos Mineral Groups
“Asbestos” is the generic name for a group of six, naturally occurring minerals that can be separated into long and thin microscopic threads of fiber. [Asbestos minerals include chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite.]
The literal translation of the word “asbestos” is “indestructible” or “inextinguishable.” Asbestos fibers are strong, flexible, and resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals. These qualities made asbestos fibers useful for many construction and industrial purposes.
Asbestos Use and Exposure
Asbestos use and exposure peaked in the United States in the 1970s when a number of factors converged: thousands of consumer and industrial products on the market at that time contained asbestos; asbestos manufacturing facilities were polluting nearby neighborhood environments; numerous construction and industrial workers were exposed on the job and were bringing home asbestos dust to their spouses and children; and asbestos was commonly used in public buildings and workplaces. Significant workplace safeguards were not consistently utilized until at least 1980, and for many industries, levels in excess of recommended governmental standards persist even today.
